Myopia Control & Specialty Contact Lenses

Myopia (nearsightedness) is one of the fastest-growing vision conditions worldwide, with the prevalence in children increasing dramatically over the past two decades. Left unmanaged in childhood, myopia tends to progress — and higher degrees of myopia are associated with significantly elevated risk of serious eye conditions later in life, including retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.

Dr. Elias specializes in myopia control — a proactive approach to slowing the progression of myopia in children and young adults using clinically proven methods. Rather than simply updating a glasses prescription each year, myopia control treatment uses specialized contact lenses and strategies to address the underlying mechanisms driving myopic progression.

Myopia control options Dr. Elias offers:

MiSight 1 Day Contact Lenses

MiSight is the first and only FDA-approved soft contact lens specifically designed to slow the progression of myopia in children aged 8 to 12. It uses a proprietary ActivControl technology with concentric rings that correct vision and simultaneously create a defocus signal that inhibits axial eye growth. MiSight lenses are daily disposable soft lenses, making them comfortable, convenient, and hygienic for young patients. Clinical studies show MiSight reduces myopia progression by an average of 59% compared to standard soft lenses.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)

Orthokeratology — often called Ortho-K or overnight contact lenses — involves wearing specially designed rigid gas-permeable lenses overnight that gently reshape the corneal surface while the patient sleeps. Upon waking, the lenses are removed and the patient enjoys clear, unaided vision throughout the day without glasses or contact lenses. Ortho-K is both an effective vision correction method and a proven myopia control strategy, as the corneal reshaping effect reduces the peripheral defocus signals that drive axial elongation.

Novakone Specialty Lenses

Novakone lenses are a specialty soft contact lens design used in the management of irregular corneas and certain myopia control applications. Dr. Elias has specific training and experience with this lens platform, offering an additional fitting option for patients whose needs cannot be adequately met by standard soft lens designs.

Scleral Lenses

For patients with keratoconus, irregular corneas, post-surgical eyes, or severe dry eye, scleral lenses provide a large-diameter rigid gas-permeable lens that vaults over the entire corneal surface and rests on the sclera. Dr. Elias's clinical rotation at Corneal Associates of New Jersey provided her with foundational experience in corneal and specialty contact lens care, which she brings to her scleral lens fittings at Affiliated Eye Surgeons.
